How to Choose an E-bike

E-bike is not new to the market anymore. Many people had tried e-bike and find that it is fun to ride. However, many cyclists, especially those cyclists who really cycle well, disagree with an e-bike and stays with a regular bike, claiming an e-bike is not helpful in their health.
They are not entirely wrong, but they had ignored one big point, which is not everyone is as good as them and we should not ignore that cyclists are looking for fun in their ride too, and riding an e-bike is fun. Riding an e-bike for the first time might give you the feeling like you are a pro.
Consider your needs
Are you looking for a road bike, a mountain bike, or a hybrid? If you need further explanation about these bikes, find out more details here.
What is the reason you buy an e-bike? To enjoy the experience of a pro? To uplift your ride so that you can join those riders who are fitter than you? To prolong your riding journey so that you can go further? To spend less effort uphill so that you could enjoy more downhill? To conquer new territories to satisfy your cycling hunger?
Understanding your need is important so that you won’t end up with the wrong bike. Many people choose the e-bike with more features but ended up not the one that fulfills his need the most.
E-bike motor location
There are 2 types of e-bike. One is called a mid-drive motor. Another is called a hub-drive motor. The location of the motor of the mid-drive is placed on the bottom bracket, the place where the crank arms attach to the bike frame.
Hub drive is placed inside the hub of the rear wheel, that’s why it is called hub drive motor. The rear-wheel hub drive motor sends pedal power straight to the rear wheel, and you will feel the force is pushing you from behind. However, changing the tire of the wheel is very complex and it is not very recommended.
Mid-drive motors are more common for many reasons. The pedal assist gives a natural responding feel and the weight of the motor at the lower center of the bike allows balancing and stability to the bike.
The power and the battery of the e-bike
The reason we choose an e-bike is to enjoy the fun, the power of the bike. So, the power and battery matter the most in an e-bike.
A more powerful motor delivers more speed to you on flat roads and more torque for you in climbing hills. However, a more powerful motor also consumes more battery, thus burns up the battery faster, reducing the riding range.
Having a battery definitely helps e-bike to perform better. A bigger capacity battery will prolong the riding range and also provide more power, especially to eMTB.
There are 2 types of batteries. The external battery and integrated battery. External battery is easier to charge and replace. An integrated battery is integrated into the frame. So, it has more space for bottle cages or a small bike bag. And some integrated battery comes with security lock too.
Most batteries require 3 to 5 hours to fully charge from empty. Usually, the battery will last 4 hours or 100 km range.
Choose a reliable seller and Take note of the warranty
E-bike is not cheap. It is a 5 figure investment and you should choose a quality e-bike with a reputational brand. Besides, a purchase with a warranty will buy you peace of mind. A 2-year warranty on parts, motor, and battery are reasonable for an e-bike.
Have the right but high expectation
E-bike is supposed to be quality. You should not only care about how the way the bike was built, the quality of its construction, but also the after-sales service to keep your e-bike in good condition.
You should expect that your bike should last 10 years with regular service, and the battery should last from 600 to 800 charge cycles, depending on how you use your bike.
Study the feature
E-bike comes with many features. Such as riding mode, light, cargo carriage, smartphone integration and etc.
Another notable feature is the security feature. Some of the e-bikes come with a lock. You can lock the bike whenever you reach the destination so that the battery and the bike wouldn’t be stolen.
